The people of Rome were very keen on fashion and how they looked. The people always tried to keep up with the latest fashion.
Fashion in Rome depended on what the Emperor and his wife wore. If you were a wealthier person you could keep up with the latest fashion trends. If you were poor you didn’t prioritize fashion. Clothes usually consisted of a tunic and a toga for men. Women usually wore a tunic under a robe like a piece of cloth called a stola. They also wore a scarf like piece of cloth over their hair called a palla. Types of cloth varied from wool and linen, to fabrics like silk and velvet. Fabric choice would depend on how rich or poor you were. Shoes usually were leather sandals. Boots were worn by soldiers in the military or for people who worked on the farm. However, accessories consisted of any rings, necklaces, earrings, and brooches. Roman women had beautiful hairstyles, braiding, and hair clips studded with precious gems.
Roman fashion was a very important part of Roman culture and civilization.
