History 5 Week 4 Summary

This week in history I learned about portland cement, electromagnets, the passenger rail, and the match.

First, I learned about portland cement. Portland cement was invented by a man named Joseph Aspdin. Joseph invented portland cement so that structures could be built on a flat surface. He named it portland cement because the stones in Portland were white like his cement. To make portland cement you crush some portland stone and powdered glass mixed with water.

Second, I learned about the electromagnet. The electromagnet was invented by a man named William Sturgen. Electromagnets use the magnetic field produced by electric currents to turn ferromagnetic materials into very strong magnets.

Third, I learned about the passenger rail. The passenger rail was invented by a man named George Stephenson. He invented the passenger rail after high pressure steam engines and the locomotive came out. It was most popular in Great Britain and America helping transportation greatly. The passenger rail gets people and things across the country quickly.

Fourth, I learned about the match. Matches were invented by a man named John Walker. John Walker invented the match almost by accident. The match is a simple chemical head embedded on a stick. The match helped people with their smoking, barbeque, and leisurely activities.

The most interesting thing I learned about was the match because it makes starting a fire a lot easier.

This week in history I learned about things that are used in our every day life, and help progress society.
