Today I will be telling the story of Marco Polo.
The story begins with his uncle and father. They were merchants who traded with the city of Sarai. They were distracted from their work when a war broke out. They became soldiers and served very well under the Italian government. One day as they were fighting, they were captured and held for three years. Later Kublai Khan’s soldiers rescued them. Before the two men left, the soldiers convinced them to stay in China. Kublai loved his guests and was intrigued with their ways. After a while, they came back to Europe. Marco’s father got married and had Marco Polo. Marco was born in 1254. Marco was living with his aunt and uncle when his father came to see him. In this visit his father told him that they must sail to China. They gathered their supplies and traveled by sea to China. Marco’s keen eyes took in all that he saw and he wrote about what he saw in his journal. Marco, when they landed, was treated with respect by Kublai’s men. As the years went on, Marco was well liked by Kublai and was appointed to his Privy Council. Years later he decided to go back to Venice and tell of his adventures. He spent so many years speaking Chinese that when he went back to Venice, he did not fit in speaking Italian at first, and felt excluded. Later he became a great author about his travels.
I think that the journey of Marco Polo is very interesting and worth studying.
