Marble

Marble is a beautiful white rock with elegant lines on it. I will dive into a few facts about this metemorfic rock.

            Marble I formed from limestone. It originates from a process called metamorphism, resulting in a crystalline structure and unique pattern. Marble is available in not just white but grey, pink, and green. Marble is also used as countertops and floors. Marble, while prized for its beauty, requires care to prevent etching and staining. Did you know that the Statue of Liberty’s pedestal is made of marble! Marble is also porous which means it can absorb liquids.

             The lines on marble are caused by mineral impurity like iron oxide. Marble was associated with the Gods in ancient Rome. In ancient times powdered marble was used in medicine to promote bone health. The transformation of limestone into marble can take millions of years. Beginning beneath the surface intense heat and pressure gradually coax the metamorphosis, which is initiated by tectonic forces. The world’s largest marble quarry is located in Carrera, Italy, which is a testament to the regions marble prowess. This extraordinary site extract more than 1.5 million tons of marble blocks from the Carrera marble basin each year. The quarry’s history spans centuries.  Paralleling the evolution of art and architecture. It is an industrial marvel, combining cutting edge technology, with some time and craftsmanship Marble ranked three on the Mohs hardness scale, which has a balance of beauty and durability. Due to its relative softness, it can get scratched by minerals such as steel,  but it is still strong enough for a variety of uses and applications. Michelangelo’s Pietà sculpture is considered one of the finer marble carvings in existence. This sublime creation is carved from a single block of Carrera marble and is a beautiful statue, giving the appreciation of marble
