Constantine was a breath of fresh air to Rome after the Crisis of the Third Century. He helped bring Christianity into the empire, bring the empire together, and he reestablished the capital of Rome in Constantinople.
The first thing that Constantine did was to bring Christianity back into the empire. When he was about to fight a war one day, Constantine had a dream. A voice told him to ride into battle with a cross painted on his shield. Constantine recognized the cross as the Christian cross and he was forever changed. He ended up winning the war and established Christianity throughout Rome with a law called the Edict of Milan which forbade anyone to persecute Christians. This law stayed in place until the end of the empire.
The second thing that Constantine did was to bring the empire back together in a war. After he won the war there was a very much needed peace in the empire.
The third thing that Constantine did was to reestablish the capital of Rome in Constantinople. This made the empire more balanced and spread out. Constantinople is now modern day Istanbul.
Constantine was a very successful emperor. He was not power hungry and improved Rome in a lot of ways.
