Gems and Rocks are very valued and important objects to humans, not just shiny gems or tokens. I will be reviewing Sedimentary rocks, Metamorphic rocks, and Igneous rocks. Then we will talk about jewelry, and the quality of gemstones with a few of my favorite gems/rocks.

Sedimentary rocks are rocks that are weathered and eroded. They break down into boulders, pebbles, smaller rock fragments, and finally to sands or muds. During this process, the gemstones they contain may be released and carried by water downstream to be deposited in rivers and the ocean. The gemstones may become concentrated in gravels, cemented or compressed to form sedimentary rocks. With sufficient time and the right conditions of temperature and pressure, water can dissolve rocks. These rocks are also very useful to humans as concrete for roads and slabs for landscaping. (Guide to Gems pp.8)

All rocks, including sedimentary and igneous rocks, may be altered by pressure and or temperature to form metamorphic rock (meta means changed, morph means shape). Metamorphic rocks are often associated with large, mountain-building episodes, and enormous temperature and pressures which fold and fault large masses of rock. The mineral composition of the rock alters as the temperature and pressure changes, and new metamorphic minerals form. These rocks can also be used for building bridges, sometimes dinosaur bones are found there too, which helps us understand more about these amazing animals. (Guide to Gems pp.9)

Igneous rocks are those that are formed as a result of volcanic or magmatic activity. Beneath the surface of the Earth, molten rock (magma) rises and falls. As molten rock rises, there are changes in pressure and temperature that affect mineral formation. If the molten rock reaches the surface, it may be erupted as lava and other volcanic rocks. These rocks have also preserved historical articles which has helped us to understand our past better. (Guide to Gems pp.7) For example, the bodies found at Pompeii were preserved by the lava that spewed from the volcanic eruption.

Gems can also be used for jewelry. They are very popular as rings and are placed on jewelry pieces. Rocks are made of minerals, but not all minerals form crystals that are large enough or in a good enough condition to be used as gemstones. Crystals may also not be clear enough of cracks and unattractive inclusions to be used as gemstones. The vast majority of crystals are too small to be seen even with a hand lens (or loupe). The vast majority of gemstones are used as jewelry. Materials, however, can be improved by the creative and practical skills of the artist and scientist. As techniques have developed, the range of possibilities for the sculptor, carver, or the lapidary have grown. These gems have been the symbol of wealth and began as a form of currency. (Guide to Gems pp.7)

Gem materials have been fashioned and polished for millions of years. If they have been left in their rough state, it may be because they look just fine as they are, and their natural beauty and desirability is worth retaining. For others, there may be a belief that the strength, soul, or energy of the gemstone may be released, or in someway detrimentally affected by intervention. Some people even believe that crystals have healing powers, as well as different types of energies. For example, rose quartz has the power to amplify joy, peace, or playfulness. Gems are beautiful but also powerful. (Guide to Gems pp.24)

Three of my favorite crystals are quartz, topaz, and beryl. Quartz: Easily cut and polished, quartz is one of our most common minerals and a popular source of gemstones. It occurs in a very wide range of colors. In the last hundred years quartz has replaced watch-springs. (Rocks and Minerals of North America pp.72)

Topaz: Although topaz comes in many colors, the red or purplish-red stones are artificially created by treating a raw brownish-yellow topaz specimen with heat. The name comes from the Greek topazos, meaning ‘’a precious stone.’’ (Rocks and Minerals of North America pp. 74)

Beryl: This one mineral is the source of several gemstones, including emeralds and aquamarine. It is also the principal source of beryllium, an element used as a hardening agent in certain alloys. (Rocks and Minerals of North America pp. 98)

I think crystals play a very important part in our every day life from minerals in our gardens to elegant jewelry on our fingers. They are useful but beautiful, which I think is a virtue that makes them the gems that they are.

The Cat of Bubastes https://gisellaschool.com/2025/08/08/the-cat-of-bubastes/ https://gisellaschool.com/2025/08/08/the-cat-of-bubastes/#respond Fri, 08 Aug 2025 23:30:44 +0000 https://gisellaschool.com/?p=320 The Cat of Bubastes is a book about ancient Egypt. I will be talking about the defeat of the Rebu people, the capture or ‘’slavery’’ of two of the Rebu people, and the death of the cat of Bubastes.

The Rebu were expecting an attack from Egypt. They prepared for war, and the king died in battle. The prince was miraculously saved by his body guard, and was taken to the Rebu capital. The Egyptians then laid siege to the city and captured all the survivors taking them back to the capital of Egypt, Thebes.

The prince and his bodyguard were picked by the high priest of Egypt, and the priest was very kind to them. They cared for the priest’s two children. The prince took care of the boy and his animals, helped him study, and kept him company. The bodyguard did the same as the prince, just for the girl child.

The original cat of Bubastes had died and when it died the priest would search for its successor. The girls cat was chosen and there was much rejoicing but, the cat died suddenly shortly after she was chosen. Loosing a cat in Egyptian religion is considered bad luck so the family experienced some bad luck. However, the family will learn some new things about their religion that they never knew.

I think The Cat of Bubastes is a very exciting story and I think it will continue to be very mysterious!

My Dream Job https://gisellaschool.com/2025/08/08/my-dream-job-2/ https://gisellaschool.com/2025/08/08/my-dream-job-2/#respond Fri, 08 Aug 2025 23:26:25 +0000 https://gisellaschool.com/?p=318 My dream job is to be a vetrinarian. I would like to work for myself, I would like to groom the animals, and I would like to do dance part time.

I would like to work for myself because I would like to be my own boss. I would want to own a brick mortar store so that I could have a veterinary practice. I would like to be a veterinarian because I like animals and I like to help my own animals when they are sick or in pain. Veterinarians also make a lot of money because so many people have pets that need help, and it is a hard job.

I also like to groom my animals, so I think I could groom animals as a service at my clinic. I would first wash the animal with soap and water, shampoo, and then dry them off. I would then brush them and see if they needed a buzz. I would wash their collars and put them back on. Once finished I would give the price, and the grooming would be done.

Next, I would not want to just be working as a veterinarian for all of my work. I would like to dance too. Dancing has been my passion for years even to this day. I would not want all my dance training to go down the toilet so I would like to be a dance teacher for kids, sharing the art of dance.

My dream job would include being a veterinarian and dance teacher both. I love animals and the connections you can make with them and dance is very fun and beautiful at the same time!

Laurens, and the Prodigy Son Comparison https://gisellaschool.com/2025/08/08/laurens-and-the-prodigy-son-comparison/ https://gisellaschool.com/2025/08/08/laurens-and-the-prodigy-son-comparison/#respond Fri, 08 Aug 2025 23:25:46 +0000 https://gisellaschool.com/?p=316 Today I will be comparing ‘’the Prodigy Son’’ from the Bible to ‘’ Laurens’’ from Hans Brinker, or the Silver skates. I will tell you why they left home, what they did when they left home, and how they were received when they returned.

In Hans Brinker, Laurens left home because when he was helping his father pour some very strong medicine into the patient’s mouth he accidentally poured too much so the patient died. Laurens felt bad and went to the river to try to commit suicide, but Raff Brinker, (Hans’s father) stops him. In the Prodigy Son, the younger of the sons asks his father for money and spends it all on idleness and his entertainment. The difference is the Prodigy Son is happy and very proud when he leaves home, where as Laurens is very guilty and sorry when he leaves home. Unfortunately what their share in common is that they both commit a sin.

In Hans Brinker, Laurens tries to commit suicide but is stopped by Raff Brinker. He changes his name to Thomas Higgs and becomes a master skate maker. One of the pairs of skates that he made are given to Gretel Brinker (Han’s sister). In the Prodigy Son the son spends all his money on clothes, food, amusement, and fun. He then starts working for a man to feed his pigs, but the man didn’t pay him. Consequently, he did not get any food. The difference is the Prodigy Son does not get a good outcome from the situation, whereas Laurens did. The similarity is they both got jobs.

In Hans Brinker Laurens is received very joyfully and there was, many tears. In the Prodigy Son he was met with a celebration. The difference is in Hans Brinker, Laurens is met with tears, and in the Prodigy Son he is met with celebrations. The similarity is they are both received joyfully.

In the Prodigy Son the younger son is very sinful but is forgiven by his father. However, Laurens in Hans Brinker, is apologetic and runs away changing his name, gets a job, and becomes a master at making skates.

America https://gisellaschool.com/2025/08/08/america/ https://gisellaschool.com/2025/08/08/america/#respond Fri, 08 Aug 2025 23:24:25 +0000 https://gisellaschool.com/?p=314 America the land of the free and the home of the brave. The country that I grew up and live in. I will be walking you through the culture, the foods that we are famous for, and some of the holidays that we celebrate. American culture is based upon Christianity and freedom. We don’t have any set king, so we don’t have anyone in control, therefore, generally we are free. We also abide by something called the Constitution.

Americans are people who like foods from all aver the world because Americans come from different places in the world. Therefore, our cuisine is a twist on what people brought from their countries of origin. Some of those foods are the hamburger, the hotdog, nachos, cookies and milk, apple pie, barbecued ribs, buffalo wings, s’mores, popcorn, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, fortune cookies, macaroni and cheese, sundaes, jerky, tater tots, and more.

Holidays that the American people celebrate vary between each family, but the most celebrated ones are: Christmas, where everyone gives God and Jesus respect, open presents, decorate Christmas trees, and eat sweets. Thanksgiving is where people give thanks and celebrate the big harvest that happened long ago and enjoy dinner with family and friends.

America is a country that is very prosperous and new. I think that it is a great country to live in.

Free Time https://gisellaschool.com/2025/08/08/free-time/ https://gisellaschool.com/2025/08/08/free-time/#respond Fri, 08 Aug 2025 23:21:38 +0000 https://gisellaschool.com/?p=310 When I have free time after school I will usually read a book, pack my bag for dance, and play with my brother.

In my free time the first thing that I will usually do is read a book. I have been reading Nancy Drew lately so I will tell you about the most recent one I read. The story was about this guy that wanted to marry an actress because she had gained an inheritance, so Nancy Drew unraveled the mystery.

The second thing I will do with my free time (if it is a busy day), is pack my dance bag. I pack my dance bag if it is Friday with Jujitsu clothes, hair stuff, and snacks.

The third and last thing that I like to do when I have free time is play with my brother. We like to do a lot of things together including playing laser tag, giving my brother a spa day, and of course playing with our animals. We always play together!

When I have free time I like to hang out with my family and do things by myself that I enjoy.

Swiss Family Robinson https://gisellaschool.com/2025/08/08/swiss-family-robinson/ https://gisellaschool.com/2025/08/08/swiss-family-robinson/#respond Fri, 08 Aug 2025 02:42:15 +0000 https://gisellaschool.com/?p=296 2/28/2025

I think the Swiss Family Robinson is a very influential book. It sparks creativity, hard work, and faith.

Swiss Family Robinson, is a very lively and courageous book that sparks creativity in all readers. The family invents all kinds of boats, crushers, hunting gadgets, and more! They are also very adventurous, like when they killed a walrus and made candle wax out of the fat in its tongue. They are also very faithful to our Lord. Because they are trapped on an island, they ask God for a ship to find them, and eventually it does!

The Swiss Family Robinson is a great book because it teaches you about survival and how to keep your faith regardless of life’s challenges.

My World Travel Gift https://gisellaschool.com/2025/08/08/my-world-travel-gift/ https://gisellaschool.com/2025/08/08/my-world-travel-gift/#respond Fri, 08 Aug 2025 02:40:20 +0000 https://gisellaschool.com/?p=288 12/7/2024

The thing that I would want to come back with is a souvenir of my world tour.

I would want to have something like a small trophy with all the locations that I had stayed in and traveled to. I would want the trophy to be gold on a black stand, inscribed with the locations I visited. In the middle of the trophy would be a cup. I would want to have a globe in the cup that says, ‘’My Trip Around the World’’ in gold upper case letters.

Along with my beautiful trophy I would have the gift of traveling around the world.

My Trip Around the World https://gisellaschool.com/2025/08/08/my-trip-around-the-world/ https://gisellaschool.com/2025/08/08/my-trip-around-the-world/#respond Fri, 08 Aug 2025 02:39:54 +0000 https://gisellaschool.com/?p=286 11/16/2024

I would go around the world because there are so many cool places to see in this world. I would like to go see Italy, Iran, and Russia.

Italy is a country that is full or culture, beauty, art, and food. It is also a part of my Dad’s heritage. I will share with you some of the things I like most about Italy. One of the things I like about Italy is the sculptures. The sculptures of Italy are mostly made of marble and are vey large. Another one of the things I like about Italy is the food, namely gelato. Gelato is basically a soft serve ice cream with extra stretchiness. It can come in many different flavors, and Italian gelato is truly the best!

Iran is a country that is known for parties, dried fruit, and elaborate clothing. The parties in Iran are filled with food, music, dancing, and of course hugs and kisses. Food is a big part of Iranian culture, and one thing they are known for are dried fruits. Dried fruits are always in the home of and Iranian! The clothing and jewelry in Iran is very elaborate. Most of the things that they make are from natural materials, the clothing is always decked in sequins, sparkles, velvet, and silk.

Russia is a place that is known for its military and the toughness of its people. The military of Russia is very advanced because of the nukes and rockets it has. I’s one of the most feared military countries in the world! Russia’s people are very tough because of the hard work that they do when it is cold to make themselves warm.

All three of these countries we looked at today are strong and amazing their own way.

‘’Amuba’’ Mysa said, ‘’I hope our son will not have to go to war like you did’’. ‘’My dear Mysa’’ Amuba said, “The Egyptians are conquered from this land’’. ‘’He will learn fighting at a young age, so if he ever does go into combat he will know what to do.’’ ‘’Daddy! Look at this! ‘’ Juba said, doing a back flip. ‘’Good son’’, Amuba said happily clapping his hands, ‘’I will go hunting today, do you want to go with me?’’’. ‘’Yes Daddy, I would like to go!’’ Juba said. ‘’Ok’’ Amuba said. ‘’I will go tonight!’’ ‘’He is getting so big!’’ Mysa said, ‘’It seems only a few years ago he was just a little one’’. ‘’Ah yes’’ Amuba said, ‘’He will be a great king my dear.’’ ‘’Wait did you hear that?’’ ‘’Yes I did” Mysa said. ‘’It sounded like chariots, get Juba over here.’’ ‘’Come Juba!’’ Amuba said sternly. ‘’Hello.” an Egyptian courtier said. ‘’We wanted to make a deal with you.’’ ‘’About what?’’ Amuba said ‘’About your son.’’ he said. ‘’We wanted to see if you would let us borrow him for a while.’’ ‘’NO.’’ Amuba said. ‘’Nothing could part me from my son.’’ “We would give you a thousand pieces of gold.’’ the courtier said. ‘’No amount of money would take him away from me, so go!” Amuba said angrily. The Egyptians were frightened by his tone of voice and left.
