Canute the Great

Canute the Great was an accomplished king that had a big impact on Viking culture. We will be looking at his life and accomplishments.

Canute was born to a Danish King. His Older brother was crown prince of Scandinavia. Canute surrounded by royals wanted to make a name for himself. Canute left for England with a ship full of soldiers to hopefully find himself a kingdom. Canute was planning to fight the King of England, Edmund Ironsides. The war lasted fourteen months and he conquered the city. Canute became king of England 1016 AD. Canute also conquered the civilizations of Denmark, Norway and Sweden during his rule. Canute was also very wary of being overthrown, so he killed any person that he thought was suspicious opposition. Canute, in the time of his rule, was invited to the royal coronation of Conrad the II as Holy Roman Emperor. This was a big deal to Canute because Rome was still one of the most powerful nations in the world. Canute was also very connected to the Church. In the later part of his reign he was baptized and declared a follower of Jesus in 1015. He was remembered for his faith as well as his military strength. Canute lived from 990 AD-1035 AD, and died due to a stab to the heart.

Canute the Great was one of the best kind of kings. He was kind but strong, and strove to be the best even when it was hard.
