This book will tell you a story about a sixteen year old Jewish girl that is fighting the Nazis. She is part of a resistance called Akiva that is fighting the Nazis. Her family is in shambles so she is trying to save her people from dying as a courier. She is very brave and often at the center of battle but she always gets out alive.
A Jewish girl named Chaya Linder is fighting as a courier for Akiva. She acts like a polish girl and wears A catholic crucifix, and she has blond hair like the polish, which are allied with the Nazis. She smuggles weapons, food, blank identification papers, and spreads word of the resistance into the ghettos that are filled with Jewish people. Usually she hides food and weapons under blankets and pieces of clothing, so even when they search her bags they won’t find the supplies that she is bringing to the Jewish people. She always knows that she may die on one of her trips to the ghettos but that she will tell nothing of the resistance, no matter what they did to her. She also tries to make the men think she was pretty so that they would let her into the ghetto which usually worked, but she never fell in love with any of them because she knew they where Hitler’s allies and had no intention to flirt with any of them. She met a girl that was about her age that was named Esther and had many close calls with her. She even attacked the Cyganeria Café’ that had German solders in it which killed a lot of soldiers but it also got her friends killed and arrested so Chaya hid in a safe house. Later she found Esther and they decided to go to the Lodz ghetto to give the people rations but actually Esther wanted to know if there was still people there. They almost got caught when they left the ghetto, thank god the guy that found them was Jewish. Then when they where going to another ghetto in Warsaw they met up with another resistance and got ready to stop a liquidation of a ghetto in Warsaw they dropped bombs on the Germans, blew up their tanks shot the soldiers, planted land mines and poisoned their food. In the end they lost but they kept fighting. Chaya even got shot in the thigh but she pushed through smoke, burning buildings, and sewers where she lost her friend Esther and drove to a countryside where she was safe and sound. I think this book is a must read because it teaches us to resist in hard times and keep fighting even when could die trying like Chaya Linder with a hole in her thigh. it teaches us to push through even when you are hated. Jennifer also has other books like these which I have read. Beautiful reads.
This book does not have a happy ending, nor does it have a sad ending but it is a very good book and it is about war. Chaya survives and is able to overcome the grief for her friends and family.
