Hatshepsut

Queen, or mostly described as pharaoh Hatshepsut, her name literally meaning foremost among noblewomen. She was to most powerful female pharaoh, and had the longest reign in Egyptian history as a woman. I will be walking you through some of her general history.

Hatshepsut was born to Thutmose the first, and after he died Hatshepsut became Queen of Egypt when she was only twelve. Her husband was her half brother, Thutmose the second, and and bore only one child which was a girl. Her husband Thutmose had a son from anther wife and that son became king after Hatshepsut had died.

Hatshepsut was a great architect and builder. She was famous for building the huge temple called Dier el Bahri in which the people would pray to their gods. Hatshepsut’s nephew decided to destroy her status to try to erase her from history, but records of the statues he didn’t destroy help us to figure out that the she was a female.

Hatshepsut was a frivolous Queen and liked make up as many of the Egyptian Queens did. She also was depicted as a male pharaoh in hieroglyphics but the statues of her tell us that she was a female because of the softness in the face and the curves of her body.

Queen Hatshepsut had a reign for almost twenty years and was remembered well in ancient Egyptian history as one of the most powerful female pharaohs.
