Rome’s Legal System

Rome didn’t always have a republic, it was ruled by a king, and the king made the law’s. After the last king was brought down, Rome formed a new government called the Republic.

At first, the people did not trust this new form of government and they fought amongst themselves. The two most famous groups were the Patricians and the Plebeians. The Plebians were very confused and wanted a written law, so some very prominent people wrote a set of laws called the ‘’Twelve Tables’’. After they wrote that they appointed people like: Judges, jurists, and lawyers, and many of these government positions still exist today.

Rome’s legal system was surprisingly well built for its time, which I think helped it stay alive for all the years it was an empire.
