History 5 Week 10 Review

This week in history I learned about the electric clock, blueprints, the stapler, and the grain elevator.

The first thing I learned about was the electric clock. The electric clock was invented in 1840 by Alexander Bain. Bain invented the clock because the mechanical clock always had to be rewound. The electric clock didn’t have a hanging weight, instead it had a battery that gave it a little kick which helped rotate the hands on the clock face. Bain patented his clock but a man named Charles Wheatstone claimed he had made the clock instead. However, since Bain had patented it Wheatstone had to pay Bain royalties.

The second thing I learned about was the blueprint. At first making replicas of drawings was a challenge. John Herchil invented the blueprint after taking a vacation. The blueprint is basically a piece of paper dipped in chemichals and dried under ultraviolet light.

The stapler was the third thing I learned about. Before the stapler there were different ways of binding big stacks of paper together. A man named Samuel Slocum invented the swingline stapler in 1841. Other staplers were invented but only one staple could be loaded in at a time. The swingline stapler got so popular it was used in a movie called ‘’Office Space’’ that was all about a red swingline stapler. It got so popular people wanted a red stapler.

The grain elevator was the fourth thing I learned about. The grain elevator was invented by Joseph Dart in 1842. The elevator helped lift the grain up into bins inside the facility.

The most interesting thing I learned about was the stapler because it helps keeps paper together.

The things I learned about this week helped with time, architecture, work, and food production.
